The Faeries' Oracle, Brian Froud
Updated: 4 days ago
My husband and I are both descended from Scottish Clans and have always felt the presence of the Faerie folk around us. In fact, we were drawn to the Appalachian Upstate of South Carolina from our home State of Illinois in 2022, in part, because of it's Fey energy.
The forests and mountains of America's Southeast are alive with spiritual energy. The Cherokee and other Native Americans were in sacred residence here long before this region was settled by the Scots and Irish who brought a rich heritage of Faerie stories and legends of the Fey with them.
My first Brian Froud book was the (2003) 25th Anniversary Edition of "Faeries" (originally published in 1978). He collaborated on illustrating this big, beautiful Coffee Table edition with Alan Lee of Lord of the Rings fame. He lives in the UK and his creativity is legendary.
At around the same time in the early 2000's I also got the Illustrated Encyclopaedia of Fairies by Anna Franklin. I acquired them as "reference" books to have on hand when I might need them. You never know what Faerie mischief may be afoot!! Best to have good reference materials on hand for how to recognize their tricks and then how to successfully deal with them.
More than once in the past 2 years, others who are more psychic than me have remarked on the Faerie energy and presence in my aura and personal space. I was intrigued. I was using a Healing with the Fairies Oracle deck by Doreen Virtue, but decided to retire it. The illustrations were adequate, but the card descriptions were off since this author clearly has no spiritual connection to the Fey. I won't even go into how Doreen Virtue turned her back on her Oracle deck fans when she retired certain decks making them OOP forever, including her Healing with the Fairies Oracle.
On the other hand, "Brian Froud... is a delightful person living at the boundary between Faery and this world. He acts as an ambassador between the worlds through his brilliant art." Jessica Macbeth author of the text for The Faeries' Oracle deck and guidebook.
I'm astonished that I was totally unaware of this deck until recently. It's been available for 25 years since it was originally published in 2000.
Faerie Folk are little elementals that are embedded in Nature as well as in Other dimensional realms that parallel our own. In fact, some say they embody the conscious soul of Mother Nature. The type of Fey; gnomes, pixies, hobgoblins, slyphs, water nymphs, etc... have different likes, dislikes, locations and motivations. The artistic depictions are stunning with a breathtaking mix of the fantastical, and the magickal hidden in Nature.
I was so entranced with The Faeries' Oracle, I quickly discovered that Brian Froud has several other awesome books illustrated with his Faeries' Artwork. I quickly acquired another huge full-color Coffee Table book of the Revised & Expanded Edition of Brian Froud's World of Faerie.
If you fall in love with Brian Froud's Faery Artwork, you can disappear into it's magickal realm by immersing yourself into these wonderful books. The only thing better is to immerse yourself in a visit or walk through a remote wild place like a hidden grove or waterfall. Remember if the faeries come out to sing and dance with you, don't eat any of their food or drink any of their brews. Legends say you could become trapped in the land of Faery forever.
